If it wasnât any of their seven selections in the first round of the 2025 NBA draft, the move of the offseason for the Brooklyn Nets was their acquisition of Michael Porter Jr. The Nets acquired the former NBA champion from the Denver Nuggets in July 2025, giving up Cameron Johnson and a future first-round pick in the process.
Porter Jr was the biggest name on Brooklynâs roster for the 2025-26 season, which was in part due to his stellar offensive numbers, putting up an average of 24.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. These numbers rose from what he was producing with the Nuggets, but they occurred during the same period when his efficiency numbers dropped, with both his field goal and three-point percentages faltering under his new minutes.
While the move didnât produce anything fruitful for Brooklyn, as they missed the playoffs by some margin, finishing the season with the third-lowest record in the league at 20-62, it was seen as a cornerstone for the future.
But that isnât exactly guaranteed, as Porter Jr. was dealt to the Nets in the latter half of his deal, meaning the 2026-27 season will be a contract year. This was something that the 27-year-old talked about on Monday afternoon, explaining that he wants to be a part of the Netsâ future plans.
"If it was up to me, I'd love to sign an extension with this franchise,â Porter Jr stated, as reported by Erik Slater. âI would love to spend many, many years in Brooklyn and make this my home and watch this franchise take off.â
Given the large amount of cap space that Brooklynâs front office has available to use, as well as their abundance of draft capital in the coming years, itâs not a surprise to see Porter Jr feel that thereâs something building at the Barclays Center.
