Michael van Gerwen is one of the greatest darts players to ever play the sport, but in recent years, his prime has been determined by many to have already passed.
During his prime, 2014-2019, he won numerous major titles and was dominant on the Pro Tour.
Darts fans were able to get a taste of vintage MVG on Tuesday, as Mighty Mike showed up and played his best stuff at today's Players Championship event.
Van Gerwen opened the day with a handful of 6-4 wins, beating Dennie Olde Kalter (first round), Adam Lipscombe (second round) and Ross Smith (third round).
Those matches consisted of averages from the high 80s to the mid 90s. He started to up his performance level in the last 16, as he beat Gian van Veen 6-2, averaging 101.92 in the victory.
He then played Beau Greaves in the quarterfinals, just a few weeks after Greaves won her first senior PDC event title.
Greaves pressured MVG early in that match, but he was able to flip a switch in the second half and finished with an average of 102.47 in a 6-2 win.
The match of the day was his semifinal match against Martin Schindler. MVG was virtually unstoppable, as he won 7-0 and averaged 122.34.
Despite getting zero legs on the board, Schindler still averaged 108.78, but got no darts at a double due to MVG's brilliance.
MVG followed his dominant semifinal win with another elite performance in the final, beating Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode 8-5, and averaged 106.57 in that win.
