Michigan has secured its quarterback of the future.
2027 West Valley City (Utah) West four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati announced his verbal commitment to the Wolverines on Tuesday, just one day after decommitting from Illinois.
Along with head coach Kyle Whittingham, offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. were instrumental in landing Lopati. Michigan was a legitimate contender for Lopati throughout the early portion of the offseason because of his deep bond with the coaches that began when the group was at Utah. Lopati was even the first quarterback that the new Michigan staff offered following the decommitment of Peter Bourque back in February.
Other notable programs vying to land Lopati were Notre Dame, Cal, Duke and more. The Fighting Irish at first appeared to be a major frontrunner following a weekend trip a couple weeks ago, but the Wolverines pulled ahead following his trip to Ann Arbor for a multi-day weekend visit in early April.
Lopati is scheduled to take his official visit to Michigan on June 19 during Victor’s Weekend.
Rounding out Michigan’s 2027 recruiting class are four-star edge rusher Recarder Kitchen, four-star safety Darrell Mattison, three-star offensive lineman Sidney Rouleau, three-star safety Maxwell Miles, and three-star offensive lineman Louis Esposito.
At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Lopati is listed as the No. 115 overall prospect in the country and No. 2 player in the state of Utah, per Rivals. ESPN has Lopati ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2027 class. As a junior last fall, Lopati completed 114-of-176 passes for 2,671 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also had 90 rush attempts for 730 yards and 10 touchdowns.
