It appears Bryce Underwood has begun his offseason training and is doing so with some big names.
The Michigan football quarterback posted a story to his Instagram on Tuesday, May 5, that was shared from QB coach and guru Jordan Palmer. In the image, star Cincinnati Bengals coach Joe Burrow is on a field in the middle of throwing a pass, while Underwood stands in the background and watches.
Underwood is set to enter a critical second year in Ann Arbor under a new coach, Kyle Whittingham, after Year 1 didn't go as planned. Underwood, who has worked under Quarterback University coach Donovan Dooley for the past decade based out of Detroit, also added Palmer to his offseason mix earlier this year.
Whittingham said Underwood showed growth starting in the winter and he was pleased with how he took steps forward in U-M's 15 practices in March and April − despite going 3 of 9 for 22 yards in U-M's spring game.
“Continued through spring, he has made progress," Whittingham said when he appeared on "The Blueprint" podcast with former U-M tight end Jake Butt. "Still got a long ways to go, but he's on the right path. It'll be very important this summer that he continues to work. And one thing about Bryce, he's got a great work ethic. There's no worry about him putting in the time. He's gonna put in all the time he needs and he's completely dedicated to his craft.
"We got a really good, much better, clear picture through spring about what he does well, what suits him, what aspects of the offense are his strong suits. And we'll start to gravitate towards that as we move closer to the season."

As a true freshman in 2025, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood started all 13 games, completed 202 of 335 passes (60.3%) for 2,428 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The former five-star prospect and No. 1 rated player in the class of 2025 also ran 88 times for 392 yards and six touchdowns.
Burrow knows what it takes to succeed. A four-star quarterback coming out of Ohio, Burrow committed to Ohio State, then transferred to LSU, where he blossomed.
Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood (19) runs the ball against Team Blue during the spring game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Burrow put together one of the best collegiate seasons by a quarterback in NCAA history when he completed 402 of 527 passes (76.3%) for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also ran for 368 yards and five touchdowns as he led the Tigers to the 2019 national championship and won the Heisman Trophy.
While those numbers won't be duplicated by Underwood, the expectation he came to Ann Arbor with was to get U-M back to the national title game and to put himself on the shortlist of Heisman Trophy contenders. Year 1 wasn't close to that, but 2026 is a fresh slate with new offensive coordinator Jason Beck, quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. and another year of experience.
Palmer also worked with Josh Allen, a quarterback who is similar to Underwood in the sense he's athletic, has a big frame and a power arm. Allen has become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
While it's not a guarantee Underwood will take a massive leap, he's putting in the work to give himself every opportunity to do so.
"We exposed him to everything this spring, but again, we got to know him a lot better," Whittingham said. "We'll continue to move and evolve the offense in a direction that really suits what he does best."
