Mike Tomlin finally explains real reason behind leaving Steelers

For nearly two decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers stood as the gold standard for NFL stability. Mike Tomlin was the man holding it all together. After 19 seasons, one of the most decorated coaching tenures in league history came to a close following the 2025 season.

The Steelers went 10-7 and bowed out in the Wild Card round to the Houston Texans in January 2026. That’s when Tomlin made the call to step away from the sidelines, ending an era that never saw him post a losing season.

But what drove the decision? Tomlin opened up about it during a recent appearance on NBC’s “NBA Showtime,” and his answer carried more weight than most expected.

“There’s a loneliness with leadership. I just thought it was a good time for me, personally. And by that, I mean just where I am in life. And I thought it was a good time for the organization, to be quite honest with you. We didn’t have a lot of success in the playoffs in recent years.” Tomlin said (via Matthew Luciow).

Mike Tomlin Believes Steelers Needed Fresh Start

Tomlin thinks a new direction could give the locker room what it needs right now. He pointed to respected veterans like Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and , saying players of that caliber deserved the energy and optimism that often comes with new leadership.
