Missy Bo Kearns revealed that Aston Villa doctors likely saved her life after she suffered a miscarriage and developed sepsis. The midfielder shared her emotional journey and hopes to help others by telling her story.

Missy Bo Kearns has described experiencing âa different type of griefâ after having a miscarriage last month. The Aston Villa midfielder had announced her pregnancy just over two weeks before sharing the tragic loss of her and her partner Liam Walshâs baby.
Speaking to ITV News, the 25-year-old said she thought she was experiencing symptoms from the pregnancy on 18 March when she was shaking and had a temperature of 42C but Aston Villa team doctor, Dr Jodie Blackadder-Weinstein, told her she needed to call Walsh and get to hospital.
âIt was one of the biggest shocks of my life,â said Kearns, who found out she had lost the baby and had sepsis. âIâd literally been doing pilates and gym an hour before, and my whole life just changed like that.â
They went through âfour days of hell in hospitalâ, said Kearns. âI donât think we realised how much we went through until now, when you sit back ⊠Iâm so thankful for the doctors here at Villa, they probably saved my life because I had sepsis, and while having that, I wasnât even thinking about the sepsis, it was: âIâve lost my child.ââ
The psychological impact has been difficult and the England international said she hoped sharing her story would help others.
âPeople might not realise how much of a toll it actually has on someone. Obviously, everyone knows how hard it must be to lose a child, but because of the highs of finding out youâre pregnant, and the stress of being pregnant, and like, the worries of getting past the 12-week mark, itâs so stressful, even though itâs so exciting. To then have that crash, and then suddenly youâre not pregnant, and your hormones change, your symptoms start to go, like overnight, itâs a different type of grief.
âPeople donât tell people that theyâve been through it. They suffer in silence, and I just hope that people may not suffer in silence now, knowing that, like Iâm here, if anyone wants to speak, there are charities like Tommyâs and so many other charities if anyone needs them.â
Being back at Villa and getting back to normal life is âwhen it starts to feel realâ, she said. âWhen you realise the plans that you had coming up arenât the same plans any more, this is when it starts to hit you,â she said. âThe past week or so is where itâs hit me. Most of them, Iâve been struggling, a lot more than the first week or so. Iâve been trying to keep myself busy. I wouldnât say Iâm fully coping âŠ
âYou actually feel like youâre the only person itâs ever happened to. But really, itâs so common, and thatâs why I think itâs important that the message is out there.â
Kearns is grateful too that she is still here and is young. âWeâve still got more opportunities going forward, when the timeâs right and when weâre ready,â she said.
The target remains next yearâs World Cup: âMy plan while I was pregnant was to make the World Cup squad, and thatâs not changed ⊠Iâve realised thereâs more to life than football, but now Iâm going to enjoy every minute of football like itâs my last because it could have been.â
Missy Bo Kearns experienced severe symptoms including shaking and a high fever, which led to her hospitalization for sepsis after her miscarriage.
Aston Villa team doctor, Dr. Jodie Blackadder-Weinstein, advised Kearns to go to the hospital, which was crucial in addressing her sepsis and preventing further complications.
Kearns described the miscarriage as a profound grief and acknowledged the psychological challenges she faced following the loss of her child.
Kearns hopes that by sharing her experience, she can help others who may be going through similar situations and raise awareness about the emotional and physical challenges of miscarriage.
