The Indianapolis Colts and nickel cornerback Kenny Moore II are parting ways, with the team looking to trade him. The Dallas Cowboys are identified as a potential landing spot for Moore, who has had a strong career as a slot cornerback.
The Indianapolis Colts and nickel cornerback Kenny Moore II have mutually agreed to part ways, with the club seeking to trade the veteran. Moore is coming off a season in which he made 55 tackles, six passes defended, had one interception, and forced two fumbles. Pro Football Focus gave him a 66.7 overall grade which ranked 39th out of 114 eligible corners.
A year after losing nickel corner Jourdan Lewis in free agency to the Jaguars, a mistake even prideful owner Jerry Jones admits to, the Dallas Cowboys have a prime opportunity to upgrade what has turned into one of the most underrated positions in all of football. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently cited Dallas as a potential destination for the nine-year veteran.
Moore entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the reigning Super Bowl Champion Patriots, fresh off their 28-3 comeback against the Falcons, after a career at Division II Valdosta State. He was released on final cutdown day and almost quit football because of the experience.
A day after being released by New England, and questioning his football future, Moore was claimed by Indianapolis where he spent the next nine seasons turning into one of the leagues best slot cornerbacks.
âThat was one of the low spots of my life,â Moore says, âbecause thatâs really when I felt like, âIâm probably not built for the league.â And having that feeling of, âYouâre not good enough,â thatâs a bad feeling. You feel like you donât belong. I lost all of my joy and passion. I didnât even want to play football. I didnât want to go to work anymore.
âI was depressed. I was trying to fight my way out of it.â - Kenny Moore in an interview with Ty Dunne of Go Long
Fight he did which led to not only a Pro Bowl selection after the 2021 season, he also earned the nickname "Lightning in a Bottle" then later shortened to just "lightning" given to him by former Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus during their time together in Indianapolis.
Breer mentions that if the price for Moore lands anywhere in the realm of a Day 3 pick (rounds 4-7), the Cowboys, along with the Vikings, should pounce on the opportunity. Moore, who has made $58 million across his career, is in the final year of a three-year contract worth $30 million which also carries a $9.4 million base salary in 2026.
The 30-year-old-undersized corner doesn't posses the measurable the Cowboys have traditionally gone for in the past but a new era of football, along with a new defensive philosophy, will certainly test how much input new DC Christian Parker wields.
