The NCAA has punished the Iowa Hawkeyes for tampering violations within the football program.
On Tuesday, the association announced that the program will face penalties for wrongdoing in recruiting former quarterback Cade McNamara, who joined the team as a transfer from Michigan ahead of the 2023 season. The NCAA found that head coach Kirk Ferentz and receivers coach Jon Budmayr had unauthorized contact with McNamara before he entered the transfer portal.
As a result, the Hawkeyes must vacate all four games they won in 2023 with McNamara starting. They also face one year of probation.
The school also faces several self-imposed penalties, including a $25,000 fine, a two-week ban on recruiting communications and a reduction of in-person recruiting days. Iowa also suspended both Ferentz and Budmayr for the season-opener in 2024.
McNamara spent two seasons at Iowa. He went 4-1 as a starter in 2023 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He started eight games in 2024, but after the season, he transferred to FCS East Tennessee State for his final season of eligibility.
