Danny Anderson is on the verge of breaking the state record for most coaching victories as the 2026-27 high school basketball season approaches. He has been recognized with a nomination to the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame alongside three other inductees.
When the 2026-27 high school basketball season begins, Danny Anderson draws closer and closer to one of the state's greatest records: most coaching victories.
And while Anderson has built his coaching his success in Rockingham, Yadkin, Caldwell and Catawba counties, he's quick to tell you his foundation lies in what may be the most glorious era of Gastonia and Gaston County basketball.
"When I grew up in Gastonia, there was so much basketball talent that you were always striving to improve," said Anderson, who is among a four-person 2026 Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame induction class. "I've found that you get better when you're pushed by other great talent. And I never had that problem in Gastonia because there were so many great basketball players.

"It also made you appreciate the game. Now that I look back, I realize how blessed I was. I was around so many great players and I had so many great coaches. The culture and the people that were there was incredible - and I tried to take advantage of everything I could."
Did he ever.
Anderson led his South Caldwell basketball team into the state playoffs in late February with an 18-8 record this season and 800 career head coaching victories at Madison-Mayodan, Starmount, West Caldwell, Maiden and South Caldwell high schools.
It puts him just 18 wins shy of legendary Wilson Fike head coach Harvey Reid's N.C. High School Athletic Association boys basketball coaching record of 818 wins from 1955 to 1991.
Anderson credits his fortunate roots with providing the pathway to his future profession and success.
Surrounded by family, South Caldwell players, coaches and others, Gastonia native Danny Anderson celebrates earning his 800th coaching victory in February.
"Sometimes when you're in something, you just don't see it," Anderson said. "When you look back now at what Gastonia was like when I grew up there, you realize how blessed you were.
"I had two older brothers that played college basketball so I was definitely in a basketball family. And I was so fortunate to play for great coaches and be surrounded by so many great players."
The son of the late W.T. and Margaret Anderson of Gastonia, Anderson's older brothers Andy (Lenoir-Rhyne) and Mitch (Lenoir-Rhyne) played college basketball before Danny graduated from Hunter Huss in 1976 and played at High Point.
When Anderson grew up in Gastonia, the city's football, basketball and baseball teams at Ashley (later Ashbrook) and Huss were annual championship contenders, with basketball producing some of the best talent the area has ever produced.
Anderson grew up regularly playing with or against the city's first future NBA player Thomas "Bubba" Wilson and future NBA All-Stars James Worthy and Eric "Sleepy" Floyd at places like the old Gastonia YMCA on Franklin Boulevard and on the local junior high and high school basketball courts.
At the YMCA, one of his first coaches was former professional baseball player and future Catawba Hall of Famer Jerry Maye, who would later gain more fame as the father of North Carolina football quarterback Mark Maye and his sons Luke, Cole, Beau and Drake Maye. (Mark was a record-setting quarterback for the Tar Heels, Luke helped UNC win the 2017 NCAA basketball title, Cole helped Florida win the 2017 NCAA baseball title, Beau played basketball at UNC and is just completed his first season as Hough High School boys basketball coach and Drake just quarterbacked the New England Patriots to Super Bowl 60.)
At old Ashley Junior High (which later became York Chester Junior High and Middle School), Anderson's basketball coaches were Dean Knight and Joe Robinson; Knight would become a Rockingham County administrator and Robinson is a 2006 GCSHOF inductee for his long high school and junior high coaching career.
At Huss, Anderson played alongside Wilson and Floyd and for future UNC-Asheville, Oregon and Tennessee head coach Jerry Green. Worthy was a star at Grier Junior High, Ashbrook High and the University of North Carolina, whose 1982 NCAA championship game victory came over a Georgetown team featuring Floyd and Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing.
Anderson was the Southwestern Conference's player of the year in Green's final season as Huss head coach in 1976 and then played at High Point to play for former Wake Forest standout player and Guilford and old ABA Carolina Cougars coach Jerry Steele for the Panthers.
"I was so fortunate to be around so many great coaches that helped me in my journey," Anderson said. "I always wanted to learn from those people who taught the game like they did."
A two-time team MVP, 1,000-point career scorer and All-Carolinas Conference performer at High Point, Anderson began his coaching career helping out his brother Andy at West Caldwell High School.
Two years and two league titles later, then-Madison-Mayodan High athletic director Knight sought to hire Anderson to his first head coaching job in the summer of 1982.
"I told Dean at the time, 'I'm not ready,'" Anderson said. "He just said, 'You'll be fine.'"
Clearly, Knight was correct as evidenced by Anderson guiding his teams at Madison-Mayodan, Starmount, West Caldwell, Maiden and South Caldwell to 18 conference regular season championships, 12 conference tournament titles, 12 sectional championships for 12 regional appearances and three regional titles.
Anderson says a big part of his story has been family, most notably his wife, the former Toni Grindstaff of Gastonia - Anderson and Grindstaff married in 1979 - and his sons Dan (Loyola and Pfeiffer) and Matt (High Point and Mars Hill) both played for their father at West Caldwell, with Dan coaching alongside his father at West Caldwell and Matt was a longtime sounding board during his time as Caldwell Tech's basketball coach.
"I've been blessed in so many ways," said Anderson, who has been inducted previously to six halls of fame and the court at West Caldwell was named for him and former Warriors' girls basketball coach Karen Trivett in 2022. "And I have to say, I'm a guy that's still learning and growing. I'm an avid reader about leadership and Christianity.
"So I'm a guy who's always constantly looking to get better."
