The Bruins secured a 2-1 overtime victory with a game-winning play reminiscent of American football, showcasing a strong connection between Hampus Lindholm and David Pastrnak. This creative play highlights their synergy on the ice.
They donât play much American football in Sweden or Czechia, but the Bruinsâ game-winning connection in overtime in Tuesdayâs 2-1 victory looked a lot like a creative quarterback connecting with a smart receiver on a broken play for a big gain.
After Marat Khusnutdinov forced a turnover inside the Boston blueline, Hampus Lindholm scooped up the puck and turned into the quarterback looking down the field.
David Pastrnak, whose No. 88 is appropriate for a receiver, had just come on after a line change. From the right wing boards, Lindholm spotted Pastrnak coming off the bench on the other side of the ice and flipped the puck through the neutral zone where it hit him in stride.
With a defenseman just behind him, Pastrnak charged toward the left post and then stopped abruptly.
Alex Lyon bit on the fake and couldnât reverse his bodyâs momentum. Pastrnak shifted back and tucked it around the Sabre goalieâs left skate inside the right post.
âWe are neighbors. We always call it the âneighbor connection.â No it was a just great play,â Pastrnak said. âGreat eyes. Seems like anytime he has the puck and I have an opening, I have the confidence that heâs going to find me. We have the chemistry. Itâs fun and Iâm happy we connected today.â
It wasnât their first time connecting. In fact, Bostonâs last OT playoff win featured the same hook up.
On May 4, 2024, the Bruins were in overtime in Game 7 against the Maple Leafs at TD Garden. Less than two minutes into overtime, Lindholm had the puck at the red line, and saw Pastrnak racing into the zone.
The Bruins won the game 2-1 in overtime.
Hampus Lindholm and David Pastrnak were the key players, with Lindholm making the assist for Pastrnak's game-winning goal.
The play resembled American football as Lindholm acted like a quarterback, connecting with Pastrnak, who made a strategic move similar to a receiver.
David Pastrnak's jersey number, 88, is fittingly likened to a receiver's number in American football, emphasizing his role in the game-winning play.

He didnât have a clear passing line so he banked the puck hard off the boards in the corner. The puck caromed right to Pastrnak, who snared it and then beat goalie Ilya Samsonov on the back hand.
âIâve played with Pasta long enough to know he likes to sneak way for those,â Hampus Lindholm said. âHeâs pretty special when he has those opportunities. It was fun to see it go in.â
Pastrnak said he and Lindholm are close, but itâs not like they practice these sorts of connections.
âWe barely talk about those plays. We are close friends and spend a lot of time together,â he said. âBut thereâs so many moments he just found me.â
Jeremy Swayman, who also lives near Pastrnak, said the goal was fun to watch develop.
âI have the best seat in the house to watch this guy perform. Itâs been an absolute pleasure,â the goalie said. âWhen the lights get the brightest, he has the most fun.â
Marco Sturm said as impressive as Pastrnakâs finish was, his presence of mind to stay on side was every bit as critical.
âThereâs only a few players who can do that. Itâs not the finish, but the way he doesnât go offside,â he said. âIâm very happy. This guy puts a lot of pressure on himself. He wants to be the difference and today he was.â
