It was announced earlier this week that UNC decided to part ways with five-star 2026 combo guard Dylan Mingo. There was a lot of curiosity when it came to the wording in the reports, and people also wondered what it was that caused both sides to move on. We now have a bit more information regarding the situation, and things are starting to make even more sense.
On CBS Sportsâ Eye on College Basketball podcast, Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander discussed how Michael Malone has done in his new gig so far, but they also discussed the Dylan Mingo situation. Here is what Norlander had to say:
âI was told Dylan Mingo actually got hurt again in March. They were probably going to need to redshirt him next season. He has since decommitted. Theyâre in the midst of trying to land some other fairly big names as well.â
For those who may not have already known, Mingo missed significant time during his high school senior year due to an injury. Norlander didnât say whether or not it was a re-aggravation of the same injury, but regardless, if the âUNC parted ways with Mingoâ narrative is true, itâs easy to see why Malone made the decision. The transfer portal and NIL has made college basketball more like the NBA than it ever was before, and having a five-star freshman point guard who was promised multi-millions redshirt his freshman year is essentially burning money. Why would Malone hurt his ability to build a national contending roster by paying a guy that wouldnât be able to play a full season? And if Mingo wasnât willing to budge on the money front, then there was only one way the situation could end for both parties.
