The New York Giants are finalizing a two-year deal worth $12.5 million with former Clemson defensive tackle D.J. Reader, potentially rising to $15.5 million with incentives. This move follows the trade of Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Former Clemson defensive tackle D.J. Reader is headed to the Big Apple.
The New York Giants are finalizing a deal with Reader, according to NFL Networkâs Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, giving the Giants a veteran defensive tackle after trading former Clemson star Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals. Reuters reported that Readerâs deal is for two years and $12.5 million, with incentives that could push it up to $15.5 million.
For Clemson fans, the move creates a pretty wild defensive tackle connection. The Giants are not replacing Lawrence with the same kind of player because Lawrence has been one of the NFLâs best interior defenders, but they are adding another former Tiger who has built a long career doing the dirty work inside. Reader is not the flashiest name on a defensive line, but he has been one of the leagueâs more reliable run-stuffing tackles when healthy.
Reader spent the past two seasons with the Detroit Lions after previous stops with the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals. In 2025, he started all 17 games for Detroit and finished with 28 tackles. Across his NFL career, Reader has played in 138 games, totaling 328 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 36 stuffs, and nine passes defended.
That is the type of resume that explains why New York would want him after moving on from Lawrence. Reader is not coming in to be a pass-rushing superstar. He is coming in to give the Giants a large, experienced presence in the middle of the defense, especially against the run. The New York Post described him as a veteran run-stopper expected to help fill the nose tackle role after the Lawrence trade.
D.J. Reader's contract with the New York Giants is for two years and $12.5 million, with incentives that could increase it to $15.5 million.
D.J. Reader is not a direct replacement for Dexter Lawrence, who is considered one of the NFLâs best interior defenders, but Reader is known for his reliability as a run-stuffing tackle.
D.J. Reader has played for the Houston Texans, Cincinnati Bengals, and Detroit Lions during his NFL career.

Readerâs Clemson career also aged pretty well. He finished his time with the Tigers with 145 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and 24 quarterback pressures across 46 games. As a senior in 2015, he was a permanent team co-captain and helped Clemson reach the national championship game, where he had four tackles against Alabama and earned a share of defensive player-of-the-game honors from Clemsonâs coaches.
He was also one of the more unique athletes to come through Clemson, lettering in both football and baseball during the 2012-13 academic year. Clemsonâs bio notes that he became the second Tiger since 1994-95 to letter on top-25 football and baseball teams in the same academic year.
Now, Reader gets another NFL stop and another chance to prove he can still help anchor a defensive front. For the Giants, this is a practical move after losing Lawrence. For Clemson, it is another reminder of how much defensive line talent has come through Death Valley and stuck around in the league.
Reader may not be the loudest former Tiger in the NFL, but 10 years in the trenches says plenty, and for a Giants team losing a huge piece like Lawrence, veteran experience on the defensive line for Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter.
