New York Giants' John Harbaugh addresses Dexter Lawrence situation

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh addressed the ongoing contract situation involving star nose tackle Dexter Lawrence amid reports of an impasse in extension talks.

Lawrence, who has two years remaining on the four-year, $90 million extension he signed in 2023, has requested a trade after negotiations stalled, with reports indicating he no longer wants to pursue a new deal with the team and believes his time in New York is over.

Harbaugh emphasized the organization's commitment to finding a positive resolution.

"We are working together to get the best outcome for the Giants team," Harbaugh told Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "We also respect Dexter fully as a person and player and want him to be happy. We are doing everything we can. As best we can. As responsibly as we can."

The Giants hold significant leverage, as Lawrence remains under contract through 2027 with no guaranteed money left. General manager Joe Schoen had previously described recent conversations with Lawrence's representatives as productive and expressed a desire to keep the player.

While the team would prefer to retain the 28-year-old anchor of their defensive front, they are reportedly seeking substantial compensation in any trade, including a top-10 draft pick or a first-round selection outside the top 10 plus additional assets.
