One of the biggest struggles for the New York Giants over the last few seasons has been in the kicking game.
Well, the entire special teams unit has struggled, but finding a kicker who is not only consistent but also durable has been a major problem. With the overhaul of the Giants' coaching staff this year, the entire special teams unit also saw an overhaul.
The Giants signed veteran kicker Jason Sanders in free agency, retained left-footed Ben Sauls, and signed Dominic Zvada as an undrafted free agent ahead of rookie minicamp this weekend. There will be competition for the job among the three kickers, something John Harbaugh addressed today at minicamp.
"It's going to be a competition for sure," Harbaugh says. "Right out of the gates, it already started. You saw Zvada, that was his first iteration at that competition. When we come in next week, we'll be kicking field goals. We go to OTAs, we'll kick field goals, pretty much every other practice. We might be kicking at every practice because we've got three guys to kick, and we'll just see how it shakes out."
Harbaugh has already made his mark in New York through roster changes, and if he's successful with the kicking game, he can add another notch to his belt.
Having options is a great thing, and competition always forces players to perform at their best consistently. It's still anyone's job to land, regardless of tenure or draft position. Harbaugh isn't one to put much stock in anything other than what he sees with his own eyes, so any one of the three kickers has a chance.
