New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells has not met expectations after three seasons, raising questions about his future. Despite being a former first-round pick, his performance has stagnated.
New York Yankees' Austin Wells Delusion Needs to Stop
I've asked this several times, but it's time to ask it again: just when is everyone going to admit that New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells likely is who he is at this point?
Look, I get it: Wells is a former first-round pick who was touted for his elite offensive potential, and early on, it did look like the lefty backstop had a decent bat.
But we are now in Year 3 (in terms of full seasons) of the Wells experiment, and nothing seems to be changing.
Wells is still struggling to hit .200. He is still striking out a ton. He is still laboring against elite pitching. And there are times when he is an automatic out at the bottom of the Yankees' order.
Through the first month-and-a-half of 2026, Wells is slashing .183/.319/.290 with three home runs and five RBI over 113 plate appearances. The slugging percentage is unacceptable for an everyday player, and so are the RBI totals.
Yes, I understand that runs batted in are largely a product of circumstance, but when you are hitting .105 with men in scoring position, that argument goes out the window.
Last year, Wells slashed .219/.275/.436. In 2023, he slashed .229/.322/.395. His lifetime slash line is .220/.297/.410.

Sure, the 26-year-old has some pop, but that's about it. At what point are we going to stop looking "under the hood" to forecast a Wells breakout and just say that maybe, just maybe, Wells isn't the bat everyone expected him to be coming out of ?
Austin Wells has struggled to improve his performance over three seasons, leading to concerns about his future with the team.
Fans are questioning Wells' role due to his inability to consistently perform at the level expected from a former first-round pick.
Austin Wells was drafted as a first-round pick with high expectations for his offensive potential, which he has yet to fully realize.
Since joining the Yankees, Austin Wells' performance has shown little improvement, leading to ongoing discussions about his viability as a starting catcher.

Consider this: J.C. Escarra — who will never be confused for an offensive dynamo — has a higher slugging percentage than Wells in 2026. He also has one more RBI in less than half the plate appearances.
We can sit here and harp on sample size all we want, but again, the lack of consistent offense has become an overwhelming trend with Wells, who, by the way, also lays claim to a lifetime .468 OPS in the playoffs, where he is hitting .153.
I do understand that finding a good offensive catcher is difficult, and yes; Wells does provide value defensively thanks to his pitch framing. But I'm just not sure how much longer the Yankees can accept Wells' ineptitude at the dish.
We have been hearing Wells is on the verge of a breakout since the spring of 2024. It hasn't happened, and if we're being honest, his peripherals have always made him look "unlucky." It's just the type of hitter Wells is.
There are some players whose actual production never quite matches their advanced metrics. Wells appears to be one of those guys.
New York is likely going to stick with Wells behind home plate this season, because there really aren't any viable alternatives available at the moment. But if his struggles continue through the end of the year, a conversation must be had about his future ... much like what the Yankees are currently experiencing with Anthony Volpe.
