Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Zachariah Branch, a potential draft target for the Atlanta Falcons, was arrested in Athens, Georgia over the weekend on misdemeanor charges after obstructing a public sidewalk.
Branch is a likely Day 2 pick, and since the Falcons have a need at wide receiver, he's consistently been projected to Atlanta ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. The arrest may have initially caused some concerns, especially following the James Pearce Jr. situation, but as details have time to light, it appears to be a non-issue.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo provided an update on Branch's draft stock after asking around the league and it doesn't sound like the Bulldog will be affected much, if at all, by his recent misdemeanor.
"Asked about this situation of a few folks on the personnel side of teams today," Garafolo reported on Sunday evening. "Theyâll do their research on it over the next few days but, barring some added info to come, doesnât sound like itâll be something that affects Zachariah Branchâs draft prospects greatly, if at all."
So what happened exactly, and why are people willing to overlook this situation? Well, it comes down to the police report, which NFL Network was able to obtain.
âA male, later identified as Zacharia Branch, continued to stand on the sidewalk without making an attempt to move. I continued to give Zacharia Branch verbal commands to move from blocking the sidewalk and advised that if he did not, he would receive a citation for blocking the sidewalk. Zacharia Branch smirked, then stepped backwards and to the right, then remained standing upon the public sidewalk, so as to obstruct, hinder, and impede free passage upon the sidewalk as well as impede free ingress/egress to or from the adjacent places of business. Due to those actions and Zacharia Branchâs failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest for misdemeanor Obstruction of LEO and received a citation for Obstructing Public Sidewalks.â

So, while many have argued whether or not Branch should have been arrested in the first place, the situation certainly isn't worthy of destroying the young man's NFL career before it begins. There's a good chance that the Georgia standout is still in play for the Falcons with their Day 2 selections (picks 48 and 79).
Branch recorded 81 receptions for 811 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season. He's currently ranked as the 75th prospect on PFF's big board. The 2026 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday, April 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
