It's almost unfathomable to think about T.J. Watt playing for any team other than the Pittsburgh Steelers, but as he gets older, it becomes more and more possible.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler laid out a scenario in which Watt might not be a Steeler as soon as 2027.
Fowler pointed to Nick Herbig as someone who could do very well in free agency next offseason. But if the Steelers don't let him get there and sign Herbig to a long-term extension, Fowler thinks a Watt trade could be on the table.
"If Herbig makes it to free agency, he'll be a player who's not a household name but could be paid as one," Fowler wrote.
"To the point above: If the Steelers end up signing Herbig long term, having three large contracts allocated to one position is a tough proposition," Fowler added.
"Watt is a legacy player, something Pittsburgh values more than most. But some teams could see Pittsburgh at least considering moving on from him."
Watt is set to turn 32 in October and it's fair to wonder if his best days might be behind him at this point.
T.J. Watt could be traded if the Steelers decide to extend Nick Herbig's contract instead of allowing him to enter free agency.
Jeremy Fowler is an NFL insider for ESPN who outlined a scenario where T.J. Watt might not remain with the Steelers by 2027.
The Steelers' decision on T.J. Watt's future could be influenced by their contract decisions regarding other players, particularly Nick Herbig.

The eight-time Pro Bowler notched just seven sacks in 14 games last season, and he has just 18.5 over the past two years combined.
That's not bad, but it's not exactly the elite production we've some to expect from Watt.
That doesn't mean he wouldn't draw interest on the trade market, but Watt's contract might make it difficult to move him if he doesn't bounce back in 2026.
If he does bounce back, chances are the Steelers won't be keen on trading him.
In that scenario, we could see Alex Highsmith getting moved instead of Watt, assuming Pittsburgh does lock up Herbig for the long haul.
