End of an era in WSL as Bright, Kerr, McCabe, Mead and more move on

The Edmonton Oilers could again explore moving veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse this NHL offseason after another frustrating playoff collapse intensified pressure on the organization.
Speaking on the DFO Rundown, NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed Edmonton previously discussed a major trade framework involving Nurse, Morgan Rielly, and Nicolas Roy before the trade deadline in March.
âBut the primary pieces at the time before the trade deadline, the week of, was Darnell Nurse in a deal that involved Morgan Rielly and Nicolas Roy,â Pagnotta said.

Pagnotta added that the Oilers revisited discussions after Roy was moved elsewhere, but Toronto declined again. Now, he believes Edmonton may look toward another potential destination.
âOn Edmontonâs side, Iâm looking at San Jose as another potential fit for Darnell Nurse,â Pagnotta said. âTheyâve got a lot of money. They want a veteran presence back there. Itâs quieter. He can get out of the spotlight.â
The speculation comes after Edmontonâs disastrous 2025-26 campaign ended with a first-round playoff loss to the Anaheim Ducks. The early exit eventually cost head coach Kris Knoblauch his job and pushed management toward another roster reset.
Nurseâs contract remains one of the biggest hurdles in any potential deal. The 31-year-old carries an $9.25 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season as part of his eight-year, $74 million contract.
The deal also includes a full no-movement clause through the 2026-27 season, giving Nurse complete control over trade discussions.

Here, Edmontonâs interest in reshaping the blue line makes sense. Nurse struggled badly during the regular season and playoffs, finishing with only 24 points and a minus-12 rating. His defensive mistakes became a major storyline during the Oilersâ series loss against Anaheim.
Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks enter the offseason with more than $41 million in projected cap space and growing optimism around young stars Macklin Celebrini.
For San Jose, adding an experienced defenseman could stabilize a developing roster. For Edmonton, moving Nurse would create badly needed flexibility around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl as the franchise faces mounting pressure to return to Stanley Cup contention.
