WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — A six-run first inning proved to be the difference in this year’s edition of the Battle of the Brazos rivalry with Texas A&M Softball coasting to a 10-3 win over Baylor on Wednesday night.
The Aggies jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a sacrifice fly from Waco native Kelsey Mathis delivering for the home crowd along with a two-run blast from KK Dement to extend A&M’s lead.
Baylor didn’t back down in the bottom half, with Robinson alum Kaygen Marshall answering with a two-run shot of her own. Marshall finished the day with three RBI’s.
A solo home run from Madison Sauni in the top of the fifth to break the Bears momentum. Grace Sparks came on in relief and pitched three innings allowing just one earned run on three hits to secure her fourth win of the season while Sydney Lessentine finished things out in the circle. Lessentine pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts to get her third save of the season.
Texas A&M improves to 31-12 and extends their win streak to six games. The Aggies turn their attention towards a big SEC series in College Station against No. 14 Mississippi State beginning on Friday, April 17th at 7:30 p.m.
Baylor falls to 24-19 and suffers their third-straight loss. The Bears look to rebound in a pivotal Big 12 series against Utah beginning on Friday, April 17th at 6:30 p.m.
