Heinrich Klaasen has shut down speculations about a potential return to international cricket with South Africa before the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup despite a fervent plea from ex-England cricketer Kevin Pietersen.
When the batsman walked away from international cricket in June 2025, it caught a lot of people off guard.
He was 33, in the form of his life, and had just played a central role in South Africa's run to the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Retired players often leave when their best days are behind them.
Klaasen left while his best days were arguably still ahead of him, and the numbers since have done nothing to make that decision look any less puzzling.

What did Heinrich Klaasen say?
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen had recently called on Cricket South Africa to pick up the phone and bring Klaasen back into the national setup, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. The answer, at least for now, is a firm no.
"No, unfortunately not. For me, I'm looking forward to what's a new chapter in my life and it's growing the game of cricket,"Â he told Sports Today.
Away from the IPL, Klaasen has a fresh project that clearly excites him. Along with Faf du Plessis and Jonty Rhodes, he has formed a consortium to acquire the Rotterdam franchise in the inaugural European T20 Premier League, a 33-game tournament running from August 26 to September 20 across Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
Du Plessis will also captain the side, making this a unique venture where franchise owners and players are the same.
"I'm really looking forward to partnering up with Rotterdam, and we're really pushing hard to make this thing happen and to make sure that we run a professional business, and we're looking forward to getting the community behind us and getting the right infrastructure and the right people behind us to make this a success," he said.
In the IPL, Klaasen has put together 414 runs from nine innings at an average of 59.14 and a strike rate of 157.41.
His latest contribution was a 65 not out off just 30 balls against Mumbai Indians, laced with seven fours and four sixes, as SRH chased down 244 in 18.4 overs.
When asked about the secret to maintaining elite form after leaving international cricket, Klaasen pointed straight to his new co-owner as the proof that it can be done.
"I don't think there's a secret. I think it's the belief. If you look at our co-partner, Faf du Plessis, he's like old wine. The longer he plays, the better he's becoming. So, he's been dominating leagues around the world since he's retired from international cricket," he added.
"So, it shows you that it is possible. It's just about you need to take a little bit more care off the field and what you do and how you prepare for the big leagues. It's not like you can just have a holiday and just walk into these leagues."
