Despite Bruno Fernandes doing his utmost to pull the strings, it was United’s only goalscorer on the night, Casemiro, who made Troy Deeney’s selection.

Casemiro goalscoring efforts rendered in vain after Leeds loss

The Brazilian found himself on target once again with a well-taken header to reduce the Reds’ deficit to one goal in the 69th minute, though United were unable to build on the breakthrough by securing an equaliser in the final 20 minutes plus stoppage time.

It marked the side’s first home loss under Michael Carrick, as well as Leeds’ first triumph at Old Trafford since 1981.

United stayed third-placed in the aftermath of the result, but now, having claimed only four points from their last four outings, have to muster up wins against sixth-placed Chelsea, seventh-placed Brentford and fifth-placed Liverpool in their next three fixtures.

The goal saw Casemiro and Fernandes combine for the sixth time this season – three times more than any other partnership in the Premier League.

Now on eight goals for the term, the veteran Brazilian is overseeing a career-best goalscoring campaign in his final year as a United player.

Deeney: Casemiro is playing under no pressure

When explaining his decision to include the midfielder, Deeney said: “Even though he was on the losing side, he was excellent against Leeds. I don’t know whether it’s because he is leaving at the end of the season, but the pressure seems to be off him.

“Another goal would do him a lot of good. He was Man Utd’s biggest focal point in the attack and had one cleared off the line. He was very, very good.”
