Markus Burton, former Notre Dame guard, is transferring to Indiana after a standout three-year career at Notre Dame. He averaged 19.1 points per game and was recognized as one of the top guards in the ACC.
Former Notre Dame star Markus Burton is reportedly headed to Indiana, capping a threeāyear run in South Bend that established him as one of the better guards in the ACC.
The Mishawaka, Indiana, native arrived at Notre Dame and immediately won the starting point guard position, and responded with 17.5-points, 4.3-assists and a teamāleading 1.9-steals per game as a freshman, earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors and thirdāteam AllāACC recognition. He entered the transfer portal shortly after this past season ended.
Burton had an even better season in his sophomore season when he jumped to 21.3-points per game while shooting 44.2% from the field and 37.5% from three. He earned a spot on the All-ACC second team after he lead the conference in scoring. His final collegiate season, though shortened by a seasonāending ankle injury, still saw him post 18.5-points per game. Overall in his three seasons for the Irish, Burton averaged 19.1-points, 3.8-assists, and 3.4-rebounds per contest.
There is also a clear parallel between the two head coaches involved. Indianaās Darian Devries, like former Notre Dame boss Micah Shrewsberry, inherited a downtrodden Big Ten program and now faces a makeāorābreak window to show progress. Devries arrived from West Virginia with a big contract and an expectation to return Indiana to relevance, but after a first season that ended short of the NCAA Tournament, there is growing sentiment that the next year could be ātournament or bustā for his tenure.
Shrewsberry, similarly, is going to have to prove on the court that he can turn around the struggles of the Fighting Irish program otherwise a change may be demanded in South Bend.
