The NY Mets return to Citi Field after a nine-game road trip, facing the Tigers in a crucial three-game series starting at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mets need to improve their performance after struggling offensively in recent games.
NEW YORK — The urgency is beginning to set in for the Mets as they return home after an incomplete nine-game road trip.
While the Mets won five of their nine games out west, the club's offense was held to three runs or fewer in five separate games. They whiffed at an opportunity to score three series victories when they pushed across one run in each of the last two games against the Diamondbacks.
Now, the Mets return to Citi Field with an understanding that something needs to change for them to change the trajectory of their season. It begins with a three-game series against the Tigers, beginning at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday night at Citi Field. That chance will run through the Subway Series later this week as they welcome the Yankees for three games beginning on Friday.
"We’ve got to be better than what we’ve shown. That’s not a secret," Carlos Mendoza said. "We’ve been in a slump for quite a bit now. We have to be able to play consistent, good baseball. Put together complete games, pitching, defense, offense, timely hitting. It starts one day at a time, one game at a time, but it’s not early anymore."
The Mets have called on A.J. Ewing, the club's top position player prospect, to try and provide a spark for an ailing offense. The 21-year-old Ewing makes his major league debut, playing in center field and batting eighth on Monday.
Freddy Peralta will be charged with providing stability on the mound as he makes his ninth start on the heels of his second win of the season last time out. Peralta enters with a 2-3 record and 3.12 ERA. He'll go up against the Tigers' Jack Flaherty, who holds an 0-3 record and 5.56 ERA entering his ninth start.
