Spoelstra: No need to penalize Ball any further

The New York Giants and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence are at an impasse over a contract extension, following his trade request. The Giants are exploring trade options while expressing a desire to keep Lawrence on the team.
Perhaps of interest to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Giants, and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence are at an "impasse," according to Ian Rapoport.
Recently, Lawrence requested a trade, and while he and the Giants have had extension talks since then, the two sides have been unable to come to terms on a new deal.
Rapoport adds that the Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade. Giants GM Joe Schoen had this to say:
“I'll echo what coach said last week," Schoen said. "We'd like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we'll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We'll see."
Schoen was not going to put any deadline on when a decision on Lawrence's future has to be made, but next week's draft is an obvious inflection point.
As far as what the Giants are looking to get in return if they were to trade Lawrence, the asking price is steep, according to Ari Meirov.
"Teams interested in trading for Giants DT Dexter Lawrence are under the impression the Giants won’t entertain any deal that doesn’t include a 1st-round pick and possibly more," Meirov posted on X.
In addition to the draft capital that will have to be traded away to acquire Lawrence, a new deal would be required as well -- although Lawrence still has two years remaining on his current contract.
If the Giants are determined to get a first-round pick, the Jaguars -- if at all interested -- would be at a disadvantage without a first-round selection in this year's draft. Jacksonville does have 11 picks in total this year, however.
When speaking with the media recently, GM James Gladstone was asked about Lawrence's availability.
"That's not something we've gone into," Gladstone said. "Obviously, he's under contract with them, so not at liberty necessarily to even talk about it."
Defensive tackle remains one of the biggest needs that the Jaguars still have to address on their roster. Lawrence is a three-time Pro Bowler.
