Columbus, Ohio State guard Mathieu Grujicic has opted to enter the transfer portal and continue his collegiate career elsewhere, according to The Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy.
The 6-foot-7, 210-pound guard committed to Ohio State last June, joining the program in the fall after playing professionally in Spain before that. Grujicic appeared in just six games for the Buckeyes, logging 33 minutes and scoring six points on 1-for-8 shooting while going 3-for-7 at the free throw line.
Grujcic, or “Gru” as he has become known, appeared in six of Ohio State’s first 12 games, but did not make an appearance after recording a “1-Trillion” against Grambling State on December 23.
He seemed optimistic but not 100% certain about his future at Ohio State the day before the Buckeyes’ 66-64 loss to TCU in the NCAA Tournament, telling the Columbus Dispatch, “Let’s see. Hopefully I stay at Ohio State. I definitely want to stay here, so let’s see what happens.”
Grujicic may be a candidate for a medical redshirt because he only played in six of Ohio State’s 34 games and did not play in the final 22 games. He dealt with a handful of minor injuries throughout the season that impacted his practice availability, including a wrist injury towards the end of the season. The NCAA ultimately would determine whether Grujicic, who does not turn 19 until June, would get an extra year of eligibility or not.
Grujicic was the No. 183 recruit in the 2025 class and a three-star prospect, per 247Sports, and was one of many freshmen from Germany to play collegiate basketball this season. Ohio State faced two others last season — Hannes Steinbach of Washington and Johann Grunloh of Virginia.
Before committing to Ohio State last June, Grujicic was recruited by a handful of other power conference teams, including Kansas State and Louisville, before joining the Buckeyes.
Good luck to Mathieu, wherever he winds up!
