The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Athletics 2-1, ending a three-game losing streak. Chris Bassitt pitched six innings with a cut on his hand, contributing to the win.
BALTIMORE â The Baltimore Oriolesâ luck wouldnât seem to turn. Knotted in a 1-1 game with the Athletics, they kept barely missing the clutch hit they needed to take the lead.
Weston Wilson hit a liner down the right field line in the fifth that had the distance for a home run â but just stayed foul. Adley Rutschman crushed a fly ball to deep left field with the bases loaded later in the inning that Tyler Soderstrom caught with a leaping grab. Dylan Beavers dropped a blooper to left in the sixth with runners on the corners that was an inch into foul territory.
Then, their luck turned.
In that same at-bat, Beavers worked a lengthy at-bat against Athletics starter Luis Severino before putting the Orioles (18-23) ahead for good with an RBI single that salvaged a 2-1 win Sunday in their weekend series. The victory ended the Oriolesâ three-game losing streak and marked their second win over a team with a winning record.
Chris Bassitt allowed one run in six innings while pitching with an apparent cut on his hand. He regularly wiped blood across his pants during the outing. He pitched behind Keegan Akin, who threw a scoreless first inning as the first pitcher to serve as an opener for the Orioles this season.
Bassitt struck out six with four hits and a walk, throwing 66 of his 94 pitches for strikes and generating a season-high 14 swings and misses. The right-hander who signed to a one-year, $18.5 million deal this offseason as a veteran innings eater has completed six innings in two of his past three starts after failing to make it that far in any of his first five.
His performance, as well as strong appearances from Akin and late-inning arms and , broke up a streak of 25 straight games in which Baltimore allowed three runs or more. That matched the Oriolesâ longest streak since going 25 in a row from July 24 to Aug. 19 in 2019.
The final score was 2-1 in favor of the Baltimore Orioles.

The Athletics struck first on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Carlos Cortes in the second, and the Orioles responded an inning later when Gunnar Henderson beat first baseman Nick Kurtz to the bag for an infield RBI single. The highlight of the inning, however, came in the top half of the frame when home plate umpire Carlos Torres ejected Orioles infield coach Miguel Cairo for arguing.
Torres denied catcher Samuel Basallo the opportunity to challenge a called ball because he took too long to tap his mask. Basallo had assumed the pitch was a strike and pulled his arm back to throw the baseball around the bases before realizing and tapping the top of his head. Torres had previously denied the Athletics a similar challenge in the first, when catcher Shea Langeliers attempted to challenge ball four to Taylor Ward.
â Before the game, the Orioles recalled right-hander Jose Espada to add a fresh arm to their bullpen and designated right-hander Lou Trivino for assignment. Espada has thrown a scoreless inning for Baltimore this season and has a 5.69 ERA over 12 2/3 innings at Triple-A Norfolk. Trivino is back on waivers six days after the Orioles signed him.
â Trevor Rogers said Sunday that he doesnât expect to need a rehabilitation assignment before returning to the Oriolesâ rotation, and heâs having ongoing conversations with the teamâs coaching staff about the possibility of being reinstated from the injured list during their upcoming series against the New York Yankees. Heâs first eligible to return on Monday.
â The Orioles announced during the game that they claimed right-hander Christian Roa off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk. Roa posted a 5.19 ERA in seven games for the Houston Astros before landing with Minnesota. He owns a career 4.56 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 in Triple-A.
