The Orioles defeated the Yankees 7-0, securing a series win and improving their record to 20-24. This victory provides a morale boost as they remain 1.5 games out of a wild card spot.

Hello, friends.
You know what? Things are a lot more fun when the Orioles beat the Yankees than when they lose to them. I know, I know, Iâm making a radical statement there. It is the truth. Yesterdayâs 7-0 win, in which the Oâs managed to one-hit a suddenly-staggered New York team, sealed a series win and goes a little bit of the way to make me feel better about how thoroughly the Oâs were destroyed by these guys back in the Bronx. Check out Andrea SKâs recap of the game for more of the lovely totals.
This was a feel-good win to cap off what surprisingly became a feel-good series. Still, even after having done that, their record remains 20-24. Thatâs better than you might have feared based on how they looked at the start of the month. Itâs also quite obviously still worse than they need to be, even if, for the time being, that record leaves then just 1.5 games out of a wild card spot.
Being four games below .500 and being in the playoff race is not likely to last for the whole season. A couple of these teams are going to improve their place and if the Orioles donât keep pace when that improvement happens, they will be left behind. Thatâd be a different kind of failure than last season, one that took longer to ultimately reveal itself. It wouldnât feel any better at the end just for being different.
There were some signs in the Wednesday win about things getting better. Kyle Bradish now has two straight starts where heâs looked like heâs been doing better. Yesterday he actually got the results to match. is continuing to rock. Maybe is improving. There are even signs of life from guys like and, if you only look at his OBP, . There are enough good bullpen arms around to think maybe thereâs a decent back end here, especially if returns as soon as the team initially indicated that he might.

Of course, questions remain too. Theyâve got to stop getting injured! I donât know whether this is something that can be changed during the season. If itâs bad luck, then sure, maybe that will turn at any time. Maybe itâs not bad luck. Itâs not like this is only happening this season. Maybe the Orioles have baked in a bad process and theyâve been too short-sighted to recognize this and change it over multiple offseasons.
A couple of players are trying to work their way back now. Jackson Holliday is rehabbing again, and maybe this time it will stick. Heston Kjerstad is on a rehab assignment as well. One guy who doesnât seem to be on the way back is Jordan Westburg. More about him in the links below.
The Orioles have the day off to rest a little bit and refocus their attention on the Nationals. They wonât have to travel very far to get there on Friday. For the first time in what feels like forever, the team actually has three starting pitchers lined up well in advance of the series, with Shane Baz, Chris Bassitt, and Brandon Young set to go over the three-game set. If at least two of these guys pitch well, we might be able to keep this âfeeling slightly better about the Oâsâ mood going for another few days.
Westburg weighing options after meeting with surgeon (Baltimore Baseball)
Manager Craig Albernaz said yesterday that Jordan Westburg has met with a different surgeon than the previous one and is considering his options. It looks to me like he is trying to find someone who will tell him he doesnât need surgery and no one will tell him that.
Dylan Beavers becomes the 19th Oriole to hit the injured list (The Baltimore Banner)
Itâs long past ridiculous! Beavers has a sore oblique, which Albernaz called mild after the game yesterday. He was replaced for yesterday by Maverick Handley, although I suspect a different roster move will come on Friday.
Taylor Ward, after playing through bone bruise, aims to regain power (The Baltimore Sun)
Even guys who arenât hitting the IL are dealing with secret injuries! Wardâs one home run is apparently due to this. The walks are fun. Hopefully he can get walks and hit homers eventually.
If the Orioles want to use him as an opener again, Keegan Akin is up for it (Steve on Baseball)
Unlike a number of experiments the 2026 Orioles have tried, this oneâs first go-round actually worked out. So maybe they will try it again.

I am just superstitious enough that headlines like this make me a little nervous.
In their 44th game last year, the Orioles lost to the Nationals, 10-6, to fall to 15-29 on the season. This was the first game of interim manager Tony Mansolinoâs tenure, and the fifth straight loss of what would ultimately be an eight-game losing streak. The Oâs are now five wins ahead of what that team had managed. They appear to be on track to avoid that particular flavor of disaster.
There are a pair of former Orioles who were born on this day. They are: 1976-86 pitcher Dennis MartĂnez, and 1954-55 catcher Les Moss.
