May 4 (UPI) -- The Orlando Magic fired coach Jamahl Mosley after their first-round playoff exit, they announced Monday.
Mosley led the Magic to a 189-221 record over the last five seasons, including a 45-37 campaign in 2025-26. His tenure ended with the eighth-seeded Magic blowing a 3-1 series lead to the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, ending with a Game 7 loss Sunday in Detroit.
"We're grateful to Jamahl for all he's done for the Orlando Magic," Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a news release. "We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it's time for a new voice and fresh perspective."
The Magic hired Mosley after they parted ways with former coach Steve Clifford in 2021. Mosley, who previously served as an assistant for the Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets, led the Magic to a 22-60 mark in his first season.
The Magic, who selected Paolo Banchero with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, was 34-48 in 2022-23. They improved again in 2023, when they were 47-35. The Magic were 41-41 last season. They lost in the first round during each of their three postseason runs under Mosley.
The Magic averaged the fewest points and assists per game of any playoff team.
The Pistons will host the No. 4 Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinals series at 7 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Detroit. The winner of the best-of-seven game series will meet the No. 3 New York Knicks or No. 7 in the Eastern Conference finals.
