Report: Manchester United hold firm interest in £38m midfielder

Manchester United’s summer planning is already beginning to sharpen, with The Telegraph reporting that West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a player of firm interest ahead of what could be a significant rebuild at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has impressed despite another difficult campaign, having already endured relegation with Southampton in 2024-25 and now facing the possibility of the same outcome with West Ham. Yet his individual standing has continued to rise, and United’s interest appears neither sudden nor speculative.

According to The Telegraph, “Manchester United are interested in signing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.” That line alone will catch attention, but the wider context is more revealing.

United monitored Fernandes closely this season, with that interest said to have “intensified in recent weeks”. They had previously considered him when Southampton were relegated but chose not to move. Now, after a debut season at West Ham in which he has shown maturity, mobility and technical security, Fernandes is again on their list.

West Ham signed him last August for an initial £38m, plus £4m in add-ons, making him their third most expensive signing. They want him to stay, but the Telegraph notes that “even if West Ham stay up, they are going to face a fight to keep Fernandes.”

Portugal Progress Strengthens Fernandes Case

Fernandes’ development has not gone unnoticed internationally. After captaining Portugal’s Under-21s, he has broken into the senior squad and made his debut as a substitute in a friendly against the United States.

Roberto Martínez has described his progress as “incredible”, and Fernandes will hope that regular Premier League football keeps him in contention ahead of the World Cup.

There is also an obvious United link. Fernandes has described Bruno Fernandes as “an idol”, and the prospect of joining his compatriot and namesake at Old Trafford would carry emotional and footballing appeal.

Old Trafford Midfield Overhaul Looks Inevitable

United’s midfield picture is shifting quickly. Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract and remains central to the club’s plans. Bruno Fernandes is still wanted, though his future is not completely guaranteed because of a release clause in his deal.

Casemiro, meanwhile, is due to leave when his contract expires. The Telegraph reports that Major League Soccer, with Inter Miami and LA Galaxy interested, now looks a more likely destination than Saudi Arabia. Manuel Ugarte is also up for sale, which underlines the scale of change expected.

United are looking at several options. Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni is among their targets, while Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali have also been discussed in varying degrees. Fernandes fits a different profile, younger, technically adaptable and already familiar with the pace of English football.

Matheus Cunha has spoken warmly about Casemiro’s impact, saying: “To have this guy in the dressing room is a privilege.” That sentiment explains the leadership United may lose, but the recruitment direction appears clear, younger legs, more control and midfielders who can grow with the team.

Fernandes Deal Could Depend on West Ham Survival

West Ham would demand considerably more than they paid for Fernandes, but relegation would weaken their position. That could make this a deal worth watching closely.

For United, Fernandes represents a smart market opportunity rather than a headline driven gamble. He is young, Premier League tested and tactically flexible. If Old Trafford is serious about building around Mainoo, while also preparing for life beyond Casemiro and possibly one day Bruno, this is precisely the kind of move that deserves serious examination.

From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this feels like the sort of transfer link that actually makes sense. Fernandes may not be the biggest name on the list, but United have spent too many summers chasing reputation over suitability. This one feels more aligned with what the squad needs.

The midfield has needed fresh energy, control and intelligence for too long. Casemiro has had moments of real quality and his experience clearly matters, but United cannot build another cycle around ageing legs. Mainoo needs partners who can run, receive under pressure and help United dominate matches rather than simply survive them.

Fernandes looks like a player with upside. He has handled difficult environments at Southampton and West Ham, yet his reputation has grown rather than shrunk. That tells you something about character. It is easy to shine in a winning side, harder to stand out when your team is struggling every week.

The Bruno connection is interesting too. If he stays, Fernandes could learn from him. If Bruno eventually moves on, United need a more balanced midfield structure already in place. Add Champions League football into the equation, and this summer has to be ambitious but intelligent.

United fans will want Tchouaméni level statements, of course, but Fernandes could be one of those signings that looks even better two years later.
