Thursday's transaction wire from the NFL provided a few updates for the Green Bay Packers.
First, tight end Luke Lachey -- who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Texans on Tuesday -- failed his physical in Green Bay and was not added to the roster. A failed physical was always the likely answer when Lachey wasn't announced as a roster addition on Wednesday. While at Iowa, Lachey suffered a significant leg injury during the 2023 season, needed surgery and missed all but three games. Had he been healthy, Lachey would have provided an intriguing prospect as a "Y" tight end, a need position in Green Bay.
Second, defensive lineman James Ester -- who was released on Wednesday -- got claimed by the Miami Dolphins off waivers. Surprise, surprise. Former Packers personnel executive Jon-Eric Sullivan and former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley are bringing another former Packer to Miami. Ester, an undrafted free agent first signed in 2024, spent two years on the Packers practice squad and will likely get a fair shot at making the team in Miami.
Third, wide receiver Brennen Rice -- who was claimed off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday -- was officially added to the roster. The Packers had an open roster spot and did not need to make a corresponding move. Rice's addition means he's passed a physical. The 2024 seventh-round pick of the Los Angeles Chargers is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. He'll have a chance to compete for a roster spot at receiver this summer.

The Packers also announced the signing of second-round pick Brandon Cisse on Thursday. Cisse's signing means all six draft picks in the 2026 class are under contract for the Packers, and the Packers avoided a difficult back-and-forth negotiation in terms of guaranteed money with their second-round pick.
