One of the less talked-about free agency moves to happen in the prior offseason was that of Alex Verdugo to the San Diego Padres, with the two agreeing to a minor league contract. Given Verdugo’s career stats and his consistent performances with the Atlanta Braves in the prior season, slashing .239/.296/.289 with 12 RBIs, it wouldn’t have been a shock to see the 29-year-old get a shot at donning a Padres’ jersey at some point in the campaign.

However, life in the Padres’ system wouldn’t ever really get started for Verdugo, as he never took to the field for any of the franchise’s minor league affiliates.

While it isn’t known if this was the issue, it was reported on Tuesday evening that Verdugo was being released by the Padres’ organization, as he has suffered from a shoulder injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season, given that it could require surgery, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee.
