Pair of depth WRs steal the show on Spring Day

The Texas Spring Day was yesterday and the fans got to take in an open practice for the Longhorns. Like every other spring day, there aren’t major takeaways but there are tidbits to chew on. One of the major ones is a pair of depth WRs, Jermaine Bishop Jr. and Daylan McCutecheon. With Ryan Wingo, Cam Coleman, Kaliq Lockett and others not participating, it left the door open for those two and they took advantage.

Let’s start with the exciting true freshman that Longhorn Nation is raving about, Jermaine Bishop Jr.. Yesterday was a busy and fun day for the playmaker, consistently making plays, including a 40-yard TD catch. He demonstrated his strong route running ability paired with top flight speed. It’s clear Texas has one of the best WR groups in the country but it’s going to be nearly impossible to keep #4 off the field.

Moving on to the rising sophomore, Daylan McCutcheon, his performance was as encouraging as anything yesterday. He made multiple elite catches throughout the day, including the play of the day, a snag in the corner of the endzone. McCutcheon and Kaliq Lockett are very important depth pieces for this offense and it seems McCutcheon is answering the bell.

Now, let me say the obligatory statement for spring practice: take all of this with a grain of salt. It was a practice without Arch Manning, Colin Simmons, Cam Coleman and many other of the starters. The performance yesterday doesn’t mean Bishop Jr. is going to win the Biletnikoff or McCutcheon is going to steal Mosley’s starting spot. It just means Texas has multiple depth WRs stepping up in spring camp, which is a major positive.
