Pat Fitzgerald has officially named Alessio Milivojevic as the starting quarterback for Michigan State football. Fitzgerald praised Milivojevic's skills and leadership, emphasizing his impressive performance in previous games.
Michigan State football knows who'll be starting at quarterback for them this upcoming season, and it sounded like it was never really up for debate.
On Tuesday, new Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald formally named Alessio Milivojevic as the Spartans starting quarterback with spring practice wrapping up this week. On Wednesday, he further discussed his starting signal caller during an interview on the Big Ten Network.
"We made that decision pretty quickly once I got here," Fitzgerald said of naming Milivojevic as the starting quarterback. "I studied, our general manager Bryan Gasser studied where we are at and where we thought we needed to go and I was so impressed (with Milivojevic). I watched Alessio live as a dad last year in Iowa City ... somewhere around row four and compete in one of the best college football environments in Kinnick Stadium against a good team and he played his tail off.
"So I saw that live, and then going back and studying some tape, he's a winner. He can make all the throws, he's a leader and now it's just about climbing that mountain of learning a new system, learning a new language of schematics and learning a new group of coaches, new group of guys that are part of our offense. He's done a terrific job."
Fitzgerald went on to say he loves the depth in the quarterback room, but it's clear that Milivojevic is the starter moving forward.
Milivojevic appeared in nine games this past season, throwing for 1,267 yards and 10 touchdowns compared to only three interceptions. Additionally, he ran for 59 non-sack rushing yards and one score.
Fitzgerald wrapped up his response on Milivojevic, stating the expectations are extremely high for this upcoming season.
"We expect big things for him," Fitzgerald said. "And I know he has higher expectations on himself than I do on him."
