Patrick Kane reached 1,400 career NHL points during a game where the Detroit Red Wings lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in overtime. The Wings have been eliminated from playoff contention for the 2026 season.
TAMPA, FL — Patrick Kane celebrated a milestone during an otherwise unremarkable game for the Detroit Red Wings.
Having been eliminated from the race for a spot in the 2026 playoffs, the Wings had little at stake as they went into their penultimate game of the season, facing the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday, April 13, at Benchmark International Arena. Backup Cam Talbot started in net, giving John Gibson a rest, and prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygård got a look on the fourth line.
The Wings rallied from two goals down to push the game past regulation, but lost in overtime, 4-3, when Nikita Kucherov scored 27 seconds into the extra period.
When he assisted on the Wings' tying third goal, Kane reached 1,400 career NHL points, becoming just the 24th player in history to do so.

David Perron scored for a second straight game, his third goal since being acquired at the trade deadline in early March. Ben Chiarot fired a shot from up top, and J.T. Compher found the rebound and found Perron, who made it 1-0 at 5:03. The Wings celebrated again at 15:30 when Simon Edvinsson fired Moritz Seider's shot in behind Andrei Vasilievskiy, but the Lightning successfully challenged Andrew Copp had committed goalie interference. That call left Kane at 1,399 points, as he would have had the second assist.
Instead, the Lightning evened the score late in the period when Oliver Bjorkstrand forwarded a loose puck to Conor Geekie, who took advantage of several Wings being caught flatfooted to race off on a breakaway and make it 1-1 at 17:05.
Bolts strike twice
Erik Cernak made it 2-1 at 15:53 of the second period. Talbot made the initial save on the play, but the puck came loose and Sean McDonagh flicked it over to Cernak, who was wide open just outside the crease for the goal. Similarly, the Wings had no coverage on Jake Guentzel, who made it 3-1 at 18:03. With Nikita Kucherov drawing three defenders, Kucherov sent the puck out front to Guentzel, who scored from inside the left circle.

With about four minutes to play, Kane picked up the puck and strode up ice, DeBrincat catching up coming up the right flank. As he closed in on the net, Kane sent the puck to his right, finding DeBrincat for a 3-3 score at 16:16.
