Justin Jefferson discusses the Vikings' QB competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray.
Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez attended the first day of the voluntary offseason program while awaiting a contract extension. The team has picked up his $18 million fifth-year option, securing his roster spot until at least 2028.
New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez was present for the first day of the voluntary offseason program on Monday, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
This news comes as Gonzalez is awaiting a contract extension. The Patriots picked up the $18 million fifth-year option on his contract this offseason, ensuring his place on the roster until at least 2028. That being said, Gonzalez is clearly all in on his preparation with the team, despite the lingering contract situation.
The fact that he showed up to the voluntary workouts is a great sign for the Patriots.
Gonzalez had a tremendous season last year, recording 69 tackles and 10 pass deflections. He was a vital piece of the Patriots' postseason run as well, recording 15 tackles, one interception, one sack and four pass breakups.
The Los Angeles Rams recently made Trent McDuffie the highest-paid NFL cornerback on a four-year, $124 million deal. Gonzalez's eventual extension is expected to surpass that deal and reset the market once again for cornerbacks.
Whether that deal comes from the Patriots or another team remains to be seen. While showing up at voluntary offseason workouts is a good sign, it does not reveal anything definitively about a potential extension for Gonzalez in New England.
