Mike Onwenu has returned to the New England Patriots for the second week of the voluntary offseason program after missing the start. He is in the final year of his contract, earning a base salary of $16 million in 2026.
New England Patriots right guard Mike Onwenu reportedly rejoined the team for the second week of the voluntary offseason program, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
Onwenu wasn't there at the start of the program, which isn't a major issue considering the workouts are voluntary. However, the veteran lineman is in the final year of his contract, and some wondered if that could potentially factor in at some point.
All has been quiet when it comes to talks of a possible extension for the former sixth-round draft pick. Onwenu is set to earn a base salary of $16 million in 2026.
Reiss wrote:
"Starting right guard Mike Onwenu was back in Foxborough last week for the second week of the voluntary offseason program, as he arrived behind most of his teammates."
The Patriots didn't select a guard in the 2026 NFL Draft, meaning there is no current clear pipeline to replace Onwenu. It would be surprising if the team didn't at least make a pitch to keep the 28-year-old guard in New England. Onwenu has been one of the team's most dependable offensive linemen for years.
But the Patriots will also have to be mindful of bigger contracts on the horizon, including a potential blockbuster extension for former All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
