Haughey recently revealed plans to contribute ÂŁ2 million of his own money for every 10,000 supporters who sign up, with the aim of generating up to ÂŁ10 million if there is full backing from 54,000 season ticket holders. The initiative is intended to give supporters a stronger voice in how the club is run at boardroom level.
Haughey had earlier suggested that a well-known former player would be part of the project, with McStay later confirmed as the figure set to lend his support.
The Maestro has now broken his silence on the proposal, revealing his initial reaction during an appearance on Go Radio.

McStay said: âI definitely will be back for whatever is required. Itâs a very important initiative, Iâm delighted to be part of it, so whatever is required Iâm willing to give up my time to maybe help in a little way to make things better and to be part of a group of Celtic fans that might have a voice going forward and be able to give their thoughts to the club.

âAgain, that word unity, everybody just wants the same thing at Celtic. Everybodyâs got different opinions but the key thing is that come a Saturday, theyâre all there together getting behind the team and supporting them.â

âIâve been friends with Willie for about 40 years and I know where his heart is. He just wants the best for Celtic and that happened last year as well when I was back.â
The former Hoops midfielder added: âI met up with the board, the directors at games, then I met up with various supporters clubs from the association, the registered clubs, met up with season ticket holders.
âEvery single person just wanted the best for Celtic and I think thatâs where at now. Weâve come through a difficult time, a lot of people upset with whatâs been happening round about.â

âI think things like this can bring back unity at the club and get us all working together. I think weâve all got different opinions but thereâs only one common interest that really matters and thatâs that everyone wants the best for Celtic.
âThey want a successful team on the park, a team that entertains and I think hopefully this initiative and one or two others will help that.â
