TL;DR
The Philadelphia Phillies have the unluckiest pitching staff in Major League Baseball, reflected in their 4.16 ERA. Despite their talent, both their offense and pitching have underperformed this season.

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the more polarizing teams in all of Major League Baseball. Their offense is struggling in a major way despite having the individual talent to be a lot better than it is.
And in a similar vein, the Phillies' pitching staff hasn't been nearly as good as it should be. At least, that's the case, looking strictly at their 4.16 ERA.
Instead, as @jayhaykid shared on Twitter/x, the Phillies pitching staff is much better than that figure, as they've been the unluckiest pitching staff in all of Major League Baseball.
Phillies are MLB's unluckiest pitching staff
"The Phillies pitching staff has the 3rd-highest K rate (27.1%), the lowest BB rate (6.0%), and a top-10 HR/9 mark, but it ranks tied for 19th in ERA," @jayhaykid shared. "Largest gap between ERA and FIP Teams - 2026. Phillies: 4.16/2.74 (1.42)."
These statistics are a good look into how unlucky the Phillies' pitching staff has been this season. Their numbers when it comes to generating strikeouts, limiting walks, and limiting home runs per nine innings are actually all good.
But their 19th-ranked ERA this season at 4.16 makes things look a lot worse than they seem. The reason why is their 2.74 FIP, which is a better representation of how good their staff has been this season.

FIP, or Fielding Independent Pitching, focuses only on strikeouts, walks, and home runs. Essentially, any ball in play in which a fielder can make a play isn't factored into this number.
One of the reasons why there is such a difference between the Phillies' FIP and ERA this season is due to defensive struggles. Limiting balls in play would help, but overall, the Phillies' pitching staff should be a lot better than it is now.
The Phillies' pitching staff, with a 1.42 difference between their ERA and their FIP, is the unluckiest in all of MLB this season. With some better luck, the Phillies staff might be able to put up the elite ERA numbers they're clearly capable of.
