The Philadelphia Phillies had one of the worst starts to the season across all of Major League Baseball. Despite being a World Series contender, the Phillies dropped 10 straight games in April and were one of the worst teams in the league.
Things are beginning to go better lately, with the team winning five of its last six games after the team fired Rob Thomson and turned things over to Don Mattingly. Now in May, the Phillies have some work to do.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report is predicting that the Phillies will not just have a better May than April, but they will surge into second-place with a strong month to get back on track in the postseason hunt.
"The Philadelphia Phillies will end up in 2nd place," Rymer writes. "Second place, on the other hand, is only 2.0 games away. And even setting aside how the Miami Marlins (16-18) fare in May, the Phillies should be able to make up that difference."
While the Phillies getting back to 2nd place in the NL East isn't that out of reach, with the team only 2.0 games back of the Marlins for that spot in the division, it's still a noteworthy accomplishment for this team.

After starting the year with one of the worst records in the league, being able to claim second-place in the division, and just outside of a postseason spot would be great news for this Phillies team.
They might be 10.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the AL East, but when it comes to a postseason spot in the NL, they are just 6.0 games back.
Reaching a spot in the postseason is still very possible for this Phillies team, and it could all begin with a strong May. It's a good time of the year for the team as well, with some easier matchups on deck.
They're 2-1 in May already, with a fourth game against Miami to decide the four-game series winner. Then they face the Athletics and Colorado Rockies at home, followed by road trips against the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates.
That's followed by two home series against the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians, and then two road series against the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the end of the month gets difficult, the Phillies will begin things easier, and if they can build momentum, the Phillies could turn things around in just one month, enter second-place in the NL East, and get back into a postseason spot by June.
