The Philadelphia Phillies have been playing better as of late after previously going nearly two weeks without a win. They are starting to find their rhythm, but for a stretch, they looked like a lost cause. Winning has picked up after the organization decided to part ways with former manager Rob Thomson.
“There’s a major shakeup in Philadelphia. The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday morning. Don Mattingly is the interim skipper, with the team’s press release saying he’ll hold that position for the remainder of the 2026 season,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote.
Another issue for Philadelphia has been its batting lineup, which has struggled for much of the season. There has been little development from the team’s young players, and the free-agent additions have not produced as expected.
“What was once an experienced World Series-caliber core has devolved into a lethargic mess filled with bloated contracts. Harper and Schwarber are doing everything they can, but Realmuto is a shell of his former self, Castellanos was the instigator of a very public divorce with the team, and the ancillary pieces are a mixture of has-beens and spare parts. With no reinforcements coming from the farm, the Phillies lack the firepower to make any noise come playoff time,”
The identity of the $115 million World Series champion targeted by the Phillies has not been disclosed in the article.
The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson due to a prolonged losing streak and poor performance, prompting a shakeup in the team's management.

The Phillies still need someone to fill the void in the middle of the lineup behind Bryce Harper. One potential option is a trade for Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez.
“Positionally, the fit may not be perfect on paper. But the Phillies are another desperate team led by a president of baseball operations who isn't afraid to swing for the fences in Dave Dombrowski. The Phillies have plenty of firepower, but need some sort of spark,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
Adding a bat like Alvarez would give Philadelphia exactly what it needs, especially from the left side of the plate alongside Kyle Schwarber. The Phillies understand they fell short in free agency by not securing a reliable middle-of-the-order presence.
Alvarez has had tremendous success in his career, including a World Series title and a Silver Slugger award. He is currently on a $115 million deal with Houston. A move to Philadelphia could provide the spark the lineup needs to turn things around.
