Phoenix Suns’ Jordan Ott confident in collective playoff experience to carry into play-in

PHOENIX — While the focus of Tuesday’s Play-In matchup centers on how the Phoenix Suns execute against the Portland Trail Blazers, part of the attention will also be on how Jordan Ott fares in his first playoff-like game as head coach.

Ott, who took over the role before the start of the season, has guided Phoenix through a year defined by cohesion. Even early on in the year, the Suns showed promise of a newly defined identity that has led them to big wins and comeback victories few saw coming.

The Suns enter the play-in relying heavily on their core, but also on how Ott operates in the biggest game so far of his head coaching tenure.

“[We] have some experience going through it,” Ott said pregame on how everyone’s playoff experiences will mesh against Portland. “But we all know that this game feels different. You can think that it’s the same as the other 82, but it’s not. The last 48 hours don’t feel the same… Need that balance of healthy tension and then the confidence to go out and play and know that the work has been done the whole season. It’s not something new that we’re gonna do tonight that you haven’t seen all season.”

Play-In games leave little margin for error, where preparation meets immediate results. Adjustments aren’t learned; they’re quickly applied during the game, possession by possession. How quickly a coach identifies mismatches, manages rotations, and responds to momentum swings often determines outcomes.

Phoenix has shown the ability to generate offense at a high level, but at times has struggled with turnovers and defensive consistency. Against a Portland team that plays with pace, these issues could become magnified.

Ott’s challenge will be deciding when to lean into structure and when to allow his players to simply play on instinct.

The emotional tone will be just as important. Postseason environments tend to tighten, and composure can unravel at a moment’s notice. Ott’s demeanor, especially against a hot Phoenix crowd, could test whether that steadiness translates when the game reaches its highest emotional toll.

These moments won’t just matter in terms of advancing into the playoffs, but also in showing where the Suns stand in maintaining a high standard at the highest stakes in basketball.

The decisions he makes and how his club responds will offer insight into the present and future direction of the franchise moving forward.
