Pittsburgh Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk provided updates on several ailing players when meeting with members of the media on Thursday morning.
It was a relatively short conversation, as the Pirates have so far had good fortune on the injury front. But there were some updates on a couple players currently on the major league injured list and information a player recently added at Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jones was back at PNC Park on Tuesday to throw a bullpen as he recovers from right elbow surgery. Things went well, and Jones is entering the next phase of his rehab process.
The right-hander will soon begin throwing in sim games at the Piratesā complex in Florida. At this time, itās too early to give an exact date when he will begin a rehab assignment with the Bradenton Marauders. Jones is currently projected to return from the 60-day injured list around late May/early June.
Triolo is about two weeks post-injury to the patellar tendon in his right knee. He has resumed just about all baseball activities in Florida and the Pirates are planning to have him run bases next week. Once the team sees how he runs the bases next week, they will have a better idea of when he can resume sim game activities and other in-game activities.
Tomczyk reiterated that the 28-year-old is making nice strides and his headed in the right direction.
The Pirates will be without one of their pitching depth pieces for the foreseeable future as the Indianapolis Indians placed veteran right-hander Mike Clevinger on the 7-day injured list with a right knee MCL sprain.
The Pirates are still learning and gathering opinions on the injury but the early projection is that Clevinger will be immobilized for several weeks. After that, he will need to be braced, then work on strengthening exercises before progressing back into games.
The rough projection right now is that it will be about six weeks before he gets back into competition.
Jared Jones is progressing in his recovery and is expected to return soon.
Jared Triolo is also making progress in his recovery and is on track for a return.
Mike Clevinger has sustained a new injury, but specific details were not provided.
