USA Today fires NFL reporter who slammed Dianna Russini

One day after she made disparaging comments about Dianna Russini, the NFL reporter who resigned from her position as a national writer with The Athletic, Crissy Froyd was fired from her job with USA Today.

“USA TODAY Sports has ended its contractor relationship with Crissy Froyd effective immediately,” the outlet announced on its official X account April 16. “Her recent statements do not reflect our commitment to professionalism or uphold our principles of ethical conduct.”

Froyd was a staff writer for USA Today from 2017-21, according to her LinkedIn account, and a freelance contributor to the outlet since.

Russini announced her resignation on April 14, one week after the New York Post published photos of her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort.

In a lengthy statement, Russini said she will be stepping aside due to the “self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts.”

Froyd’s interpretation of the “facts” offered a sharp contrast.

“I’m sure you were told to submit this or that you’d get fired instead. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” she wrote on X. “We know who you really are and what you’ve been up to for years. It does so much detriment to women in sports who have done things the right way.”
