It’s looking more and more like defenseman Albert Johansson of Sweden may be the only current Detroit Red Wings player who will be participating in the upcoming IIHF World Championship.
Further updates have been coming forth to the various nations’ rosters, and no Red Wings players are among the additions.
Germany has offered no indication that Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider will be playing in next month’s tourney in Switzerland. Likewise, forward Lucas Raymond and defenseman Simon Edvinsson of the Red Wings haven’t been added to Sweden’s lineup.
Detroit prospects who’d normally be playing – forwards Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (Norway) and Eduards Tralmaks (Latvia) – are busy with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs.
There’s always the chance that one of the Red Wings American players will be an addition to the USA roster. At this point, USA Hockey has named seven NHLers, and none of them play for Detroit.
There will be plenty of former Red Wings representing their countries at the tournament. Sweden is going three-deep in ex-Detroit players. Robert Hagg of Brynas is on the defense. He played for the Red Wings in 2022-23. Goalie Magnus Hellberg of Djurgardens is also on the roster. He was in net for Detroit in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
There’s also forward Jacob de la Rose from the Swiss club Fribourg. He was in the Wings lineup for 16 games during the 2019-20 season. One player with Detroit ties has been dropped from the Swedish roster. That’s forward Theodor Niederbach of Frolunda. A second-round pick of the Red Wings in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, he never signed an NHL contract.
Defenseman Filip Hronek of the Vancouver Canucks, who was with the Red Wings from 2018 to 2023, is playing for Czechia. Center Pius Suter of the St. Louis Blues will suit up for the host nation. Suter played two seasons with the Wings from 2021 to 2023. Defenseman Olli Maatta of the Calgary Flames was with Detroit from 2022 to 2024. He’ll be playing for Finland.
Defenseman Malte Setkov, a 2017 Detroit draftee who never signed with the club, is on Denmark’s roster.
Former Wings forward Richard Panik found himself in trouble with the hockey disciplinarians from Russia’s KHL.
Playing for Lokomotiv against Omsk in the Gagarin Cup semifinals, Panik first hit Omsk defenseman Maxim Lajoie in the head. Then, after being pushed to the ice by Nail Yakupov, Panik kicked Yakupov in the leg with his skate. He was issued a fine for his indiscretions.
Panik played 12 games for Detroit in 2020-21.
