Port Vale boss Jon Brady has insisted his side will not give up "even if the inevitable happens" after Sunday's draw with Wigan pushed them closer to relegation.
The result left the Valiants 11 points adrift of safety in League One with four games to play.
Vale, who sit second from bottom, will join Rotherham and Northampton in dropping into the fourth tier if they fail to win at promoted Cardiff on Wednesday (19:45 BST).
"If we can win our remaining games and people don't win theirs, we could stay up," Brady told BBC Radio Stoke.
"We know it's a tall task, but we're not giving in.
"Even if the inevitable happens we still won't give in because the players still have their own personal pride to play for and we still want to win games."
Vale have a tough run-in, with successive away matches against play-off chasing Plymouth and Stockport following the trip to Cardiff, before a home match with league leaders Lincoln on the final day.
And even with four wins, Brady's side will be relegated if Leyton Orient pick up a point and Wimbledon take two points from their final two games.
Port Vale is currently second from bottom in League One, 11 points adrift of safety.
Port Vale has four games left to play in the season.
Port Vale must win their upcoming match against Cardiff to have a chance of avoiding relegation.

Yet he believes Vale have had a strong finish to the season, irrespective of the next four results, having taken 21 points from 19 games since replacing Darren Moore in January.
Brady also guided Vale to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 1954 and already has an eye on recruitment for next season, whichever division they end up in.
His priority is to bolster a forward line which has scored just 33 league goals this season - only Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday have scored fewer in the EFL this term.
"We have to look at how we do things better," Brady said. "Recruitment has to be a lot better, and especially on that top line.
"[We need] power, pace, athleticism and players that can put the ball in the back of the net and are hungry to run, work hard and have an attitude and application to get better every day.
"So players that are on the way up in their careers, not on the way down."
