The Lewis Cass baseball team secured a 10-0 victory over Southwood, improving their record to 7-7. Owen Cotner-Graves pitched a shutout, while Julian Davidson and Tyler Foley led the offense.
The Lewis Cass baseball team’s rollercoaster ride of the season hit another fun patch in a 10-0 win over Southwood in five innings Wednesday at Flip Marschand Field.
The Kings (7-7, 2-3 TRC) made quick work of the Knights (1-10, 0-5) in what was a bounce-back victory.
“I thought they come out aggressive and hit the ball well, ran the bases well,” Cass coach Greg Marschand said. “Owen (Cotner-Graves) struggled at first and then he found the strike zone. I know Southwood has struggled a little bit. Cory (Blocker) does a great job with those guys. It’s just nice to see our guys play well. Hopefully we can build on that and keep going.”
Owen Cotner-Graves (2-1) pitched a three-hit shutout in the five-inning contest. The senior right-hander walked two and fanned six.
Julian Davidson led the offense going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Tyler Foley had a home run, single and two RBIs. Andy Emmons had a double, single and RBI. Brennan Deeter had two hits and a run scored. Landen Goldsberry added an RBI single.
Foley, the Kings’ junior starting catcher, hit a two-run shot over the fence in left field during a seven-run second inning.
“Tyler does a good job. He’s gonna be a very good player,” Marschand said. “He keeps getting better every week. I lowered him down to No. 9, so maybe I’ll just keep him there the way he hit. He did a good job.”
The Kings bounced back from a 12-1 home loss to Maconaquah on Monday.
“Maconaquah hit the ball well, but when we make six errors on defense you’re not gonna win many games,” Marschand said. “So that’s the thing we’ve got to patch up. There’s no excuse for it. And I’m not trying to take anything away from Maconaquah. Hey, they scored the runs on us, but we didn’t do a very good job defensively taking care of things.”
The Kings take to the road for their next two games. They travel to Delphi (14-4) Friday and Northfield (6-10, 1-4) Monday.
“Delphi’s always a very good baseball team,” Marschand said. “Coach (Ryan) Long does a good job over there, so we always like to play them.”

The Class 3A No. 2 Berries (16-1) recorded a five-inning win at Kokomo (0-12).
Adrienne Scott hit a three-run inside-the-park home run for the Berries. Ellie Montgomery hit an inside-the-park home run. Tatianna Jones had an RBI double. Ashlyn Cox, Evie Kitchel and Bianca Cortez each added a single and run scored. Aracyn Good plated three runs.
“It was really nice. We were able to play just about everybody and so it was nice to see them show up,” Logan coach Molly Sterrett said. “They come in day in and day out in practice and they work hard daily. And so it was nice to be able to give them the opportunities to do that.”
Brooklynn Hagerty pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Freshman Jentry Strong struck out seven and allowed one hit and one walk in three innings of relief.
The final score was 10-0 in favor of Lewis Cass.

“Jentry came in and she answered as well,” Sterrett said. “I think she ended up with seven strikeouts in three innings and so that was nice. She put the ball in the zone and that’s all we can ask for right now. We plan to continue to develop her skillset.”
The Berries travel to Hamilton Heights (11-2, 3-1) on Tuesday for a chance to wrap up the HC East Division. They’ll host the Huskies Wednesday.

Pioneer (8-7, 4-1 HNAC) made it six wins in a row with a win over North Miami (4-8, 2-3) at Herk Hoffman Field.
Lois Layer allowed two runs on four hits in four innings, striking out eight to get the win. Victoria Bingaman allowed one run on two hits in the final three innings, striking out four.
Layer helped her own cause with a home run and two RBIs. Bingaman and Averi Layer each had a double, single and RBI. Madyson Shaffer had two hits and an RBI. Hallie Lebo had a single and two RBIs. Ava Ott added a single and two runs scored.
