As the resident broadcaster for Purple Row, Iâm always making an effort to take note of those who are calling games. My baseball and softball broadcasting has been heavily influenced by the many hours Iâve spent listening to Jack Corrigan on the radio, which has also bled into how I call basketball games. Iâve also always enjoyed listening to local guys for any given sport rather than the national broadcast teams.
However, when I call games, I usually have to do it all by myself, and I always long for a color commentator. A good partner takes a lot of strain off of calling games and helps expand the game in both informative and entertaining ways.
As Iâve watched the Colorado Avalanche games this week, Iâve chosen to pull up the Altitude Sports radio feed because I wanted to listen to Conor McGahey and Mark Rycroft instead of the folks on ESPN or TNT. Rycroft has been a fabulous analyst for the Avalanche as he brings a wealth of knowledge about hockey, but is also a hilarious individual. Heâs got self-deprecating humor and also that dry wit that makes Avs games a lot of fun to watch on television or listen to on the radio when he is there.
As for the Rockies, Ryan Spilborghs is my go-to for color commentator and Zach Goodman hasnât been bad in his first season on the radio, although you can tell he is still settling into the role and is much more comfortable when he is doing play-by-play for his innings.
This got me thinking about tonightâs discussion topic: Who is the best current color commentator among the four major sports teams in Colorado?
If you need a reminder, here are the main analysts youâll hear the majority of the time.
Colorado Avalanche: Mark Rycroft, John-Michael Liles
Colorado Rockies : Jeff Huson, Ryan Spilborghs, Cory Sullivan
The top color commentators mentioned include Ryan Spilborghs, Jack Corrigan, Conor McGahey, and Mark Rycroft.
Mark Rycroft is praised for his wealth of hockey knowledge and his humorous, self-deprecating style, which enhances the viewing experience.
Many fans prefer local commentators for their familiarity and unique insights, as they often provide a more engaging and entertaining perspective on the games.
