Carlos Alcarazās injury and subsequent withdrawal from this yearās Roland Garros is the biggest blow that the sport has suffered in recent years, with arguably its biggest star forced to watch from the sidelines.
Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, has been cleaning up everything in his path, with a wide gap between him and the rest of the competition.
Menās tennis needs a seven-time Grand Slam champion to bring something different to Sinnerās overwhelming dominance. But weāre not likely to see it until at least grass court season.
Someone who knows a thing or two about dealing with injuries is Rafael Nadal. Heās been through plenty himself and understands what it takes to manage these setbacks. Speaking at this weekās Italian Open, he spoke about what Alcaraz is facing now.

Speaking with RNE Deportes at the opening of his new museum, Nadal was asked about Alcarazās ongoing injury issues.
Given that he has struggled with similar setbacks throughout his career, itās only natural that there are concerns about whether Alcaraz could face the same difficulties.
Nadal, though, believes Alcaraz is managing things well, saying: āWell, he has enough experience, heās not playing anymore. He knows things happen, obviously, and itās a big setback thatās happened to him.
āI think at this stage heās a very complete player, winning everywhere. But where he has the most ability to make a difference is during the clay court season. So whatās happened to him during this time of year? I think itās tough, but heās still very young.
The specific details of Carlos Alcaraz's injury were not disclosed, but it has led to his withdrawal from the tournament.

āThings like these can seem dramatic in the moment, but when you put them into perspective⦠A different kind of injury comes along. And I think luckily it isnāt going to be chronic.ā
He added: āI donāt think so. I think he has made the right decisions. Taking into account that he is very young and has a whole career ahead of him.
There are clear differences between the injuries Alcaraz is dealing with now and those that plagued Nadal throughout his playing days.
Nadal was known for pushing through all kinds of physical issues, from foot and wrist problems to elbow and knee pain, rarely missing tournaments unless it became absolutely necessary.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, while fully committed to building his own legacy, has chosen a slightly different route than the one taken by Nadal, Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic.
In a chat with Vanity Fair earlier this year, he touched on this mindset: āIām aware that I have so much ahead of me, and I try not to think that I have 12 or 15 years left of my career because I get overwhelmed.
āThereās been times in which I didnāt stop to take a break, and that led to me not playing well or becoming injured.ā He left it at that but admitted things hadnāt gone well during those periods.
He made it clear he had no intention of becoming consumed by the sport. Not many have made it where he is already at in just four short years.
