Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly considering retirement from the NFL. This comes as a surprise, as the focus was initially on Matthew Stafford's future with the team.

The Los Angeles Rams likely figured the first quarterback they had to worry about retiring was Matthew Stafford.
But now, it sounds like a retirement might be coming soon for Jimmy Garoppolo.
Garoppolo is technically a free agent, but he'd likely spend the 2026 as the Rams' backup QB behind Stafford if he keeps playing.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport wrote on X on Monday that Garoppolo is "considering retirement."
He certainly doesn't need to keep playing for financial reasons. Jimmy G has made more than $156 million in his career.

Garoppolo is 34 years old (turning 35 in November). He entered the NFL as a second-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2014 NFL Draft from Eastern Illinois.
The Pats won a Super Bowl at the end of Garoppolo's rookie season, with Tom Brady leading the way. They won again a couple seasons later with Garoppolo again not appearing in the game.
So he's got two rings, and he has also made 64 NFL starts. Jimmy G is 43-21 in those starts.

Garoppolo has completed 67.4% of his passes in the NFL for 15,828 yards. He has 96 touchdown passes and 52 interceptions.
He didn't start a game for the Rams in 2025 after one start in 2024.
The Rams were already considered a possibility to draft a QB at some point to start building up an heir to Stafford. That might be even more necessary if this news comes to pass.
