Rams' potential QB target gets health update ahead of draft

The Los Angeles Rams haven't done that much homework on quarterbacks in the 2026 NFL draft, but one of the players whom they've spent the most time with got some important health updates.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who met with the Rams earlier this spring, reportedly has a cyst on his spine, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The cyst, per Pelissero, was pressing on a nerve and was causing discomfort in the quarterback's oblique. Nussmeier was asymptomatic before the Senior Bowl and throughout the draft process, but could need "a minimally invasive procedure and miss just 2-3 weeks while stitches heal."

Pelissero added that the Rams were one of the teams that spent "extra time" with Nussmeier this offseason.

The LSU product, who is expected to be a late-Day 2 or early-Day 3 pick, only played in nine games in 2025 due to injury and finished with a 67.4% completion percentage, 1,927 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. In 2024, Nussmeier completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

The Rams need to figure out their Matthew Stafford replacement plan soon, and Nussmeier would be a low-risk option for L.A. if either their No. 93 overall pick or one of their late-Day 3 picks, if he falls that far.
